An Instagram account based out of Philadelphia has law enforcement officials scrambling to find out how sensitive information concerning cooperating witnesses has been obtained.
The anonymous poster stated his intentions were to "expose rats." The Instagram account has been responsible for revealing the identities of up to 30 witnesses in Philadelphia since February 2013. Nearly all witnesses had observed violent crimes being committed.
The anonymous poster went so far as to post police testimony, statements, photos and witness's names under the screen name of "Rats215." The account was discovered during routine monitoring of the social media giant Twitter. The sensitive information was being shared from an Instagram account.
Instagram was immediately notified by authorities, resulting in the account being shut down on Thursday (Nov. 7). The account had become so popular that it had accumulated 7900 followers. The account was updated daily, consisting of at least 150 photos of witnesses with the members urging "Rats215" to keep posting more.
Some members were writing responses such as "I need to put a hit out on him," and "Post some new rats." Authorities became even more eager to find out the identity of the anonymous poster upon viewing a post dedicated to drug kingpin, Kaboni Savage. Savage received the death penalty in June 2013 for the murder of 12 people. Kaboni is most famous for vicious attack on government informant Eugene Coleman.
Kaboni firebombed Coleman's Philadelphia home leaving his four children and two women dead. Coleman survived the ambush, but lost his entire family at the hands of Kaboni. In the same post praising Kaboni, "Rats215" gave a stern warning to all, "we will get you in time."
For now, police are scratching their heads wondering how such sensitive information was obtained by the anonymous poster. Search warrants have been obtained in order to find out the true identity of "Rats215."
